Buying and eating local may be all the rage these days — but Cleetus Friedman was doing it back before it was popular. Last year, the community-minded chef parlayed his City Provisions catering business into a deli in Ravenswood, stocking sustainable meats, dairy and sundries. Recently, food-lovers have been flocking northward for City Provision’s just-launched brunch. If you, like many Chicagoans, suffer from WTNOFS (Won’t Travel North of Fullerton Syndrome), you’re in luck: July 10, Friedman’s bringing his goods downtown to Dose Market. On the menu: Michigan Farms turkey sandwiches slathered with rosemary mayo, raw veggie wraps with locally-produced Phoenix tofu, summery quinoa salad and oatmeal-chocolate cookies. You can eat everything knowing it came from close by, from farmers and producers committed to sustainable practices. Trendy or not, this locavore chef has our vote.
