Founder: Joelle McNamara
Why we love them: McNamara was struck by the gravity of poverty first hand on a trip to Africa and formed BADALA when she was still in high school–we have the utmost respect for her drive and ambition. The BADALA shop offers beautiful fair trade products handmade in Kenya and Rwanda with the profits going right back to craftsman through scholarships and microeconomic initiatives.
Service: ‘BADALA’ is the Swahili word for ‘instead.’ The focus of the organization is about offering alternatives for people in poverty, particularly single mothers in impoverished communities, by training and hiring them to make fair trade items. With the income the women earn by producing fair trade items, these single mothers are able to pay their living expenses, send their children to school and even start their own businesses.
